Ed and Jillian's Night Out at Cub's Place

"Cub's Place," a free support group for kids in crisis, held its twice-a-month gathering at its Newburgh, NY campus last night. Now under the wing of "Inspire" — formerly the Orange County Cerebral Palsy Association — Cub's Place provides resources and activities: an evening of games, crafts, and a healing circle for children 5-12, in a safe, loving environment. They also organize planned excursions like hayrides and have  visitors like therapy dogs and me at their gatherings.

What is unique about Cub's Place is that it caters to kids in the shadows of crisis. An article in my local newspaper tipped me off to their existence.

I called Marcel Martino, the CEO of Inspire, and he invited me to last night's gathering. My daughter, Jillian, and I hung out there for an hour, interacted with the kids, and donated a handful of Top-no-sis toys and one used Spingo (Aren't too many of those left)!

While I'm normally in defensive mode around men in suits, Marcel was immediately open, friendly, gracious, and cordial, and I was able to relax and do my thing with the kids.

And the moral of the story is: I haven't felt quite this good in a long time.
