TRANCE TUESDAY, the 5th -- OVERLOAD

Human beings have the capacity to consciously attend to about seven chunks of information at one time. We process anything beyond that unconsciously. Hypnotherapists make use of this fascinating circumstance using a technique called OVERLOAD to induce trance. It can take many different forms.

The easiest way to overload someone's consciousness is by having her pay attention to a complex internal experience.

Instruct her:
* Close your eyes.
* Start counting backwards from 200 by threes.  200 . . . 197 . . . 194 . . .
* Visualize each number in red on a white background.
* Vocalize each correct number softly as you visualize it.
* Picture the number fading to white after you vocalize it and imagine feeling your stress draining away with it as you
*  Execute a quarter turn counter-clockwise with each number.

You have created an overload by occupying all of her representational systems — visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.

~ If at any point ~ you discover ~ it is more comfortable ~ for you ~ to relax into a deep trance ~ then do so ~ and enjoy it ~ with the full realization ~ that you are secure ~ in your present position . . . .

You have offered her unconscious a decent option to the disorientation of overload.

Picture ~ a moment in time ~ when you last ~ had a good laugh ~ and return to that moment ~ briefly ~ remember the feeling ~ smile with the memory ~ and the knowledge ~ that laughter ~ is good ~ for the soul ~ and you can return to the present now ~ relaxed ~ and refreshed ~ and lighthearted.

You have utilized her altered state to lead her to a pleasant place.

Next Tuesday, I will briefly discuss "Representational Overlapping" — another simple induction method. Until then, enjoy the photos and the temporary respite from Ranting Ed. He normally commandeers this site on all days other than Tuesday, but he got a fancy SLR digital camera for the holidays and is still sleeping with it. And his book went live, so he's in a good mood.
